Building a new home should be an exciting experience, but that excitement can often be overshadowed when you consider the impact that your new home will have on the environment.
It’s more important than ever to consider your carbon footprint. Not only does global warming threaten to alter our environment, local considerations like air quality, water quality, and fossil fuel usage should be closely considered, no matter where you build your home, or what kind of home you decide to build.
Here at Ranchers’ Rise, we pride ourselves on sustainability, and our residents feel very strongly about preserving our world for the next generation. That means being green is just a way of life here in Okotoks.
Water conservation is an important consideration, especially during the summer months when water usage is at its peak. Our wonderful town is so passionate about water conservation that our efforts have made us a leader in sustainable water management. We’ve even achieved one of the lowest per capita gross water consumption rates in North America! One of the many ways we do this at Ranchers’ Rise is by directing treated storm water ponds back into the Sheep River.
Another way we work to conserve water is with the Water Conservation Rebate Program that rewards residents for their efforts to reduce the water they use in their homes. These funds are often depleted each year as our residents are very excited about water sustainability!
Green building practices
Being green starts before the houses are even built here at Ranchers’ Rise. Our team of builders has committed to the following green building practices when creating homes in our community:
- Using insulated hot water pipes that require less heating
- Installing flow controlled showerheads that save water
- Installing high efficiency toilets that are certified to reduce water consumption
- Installing Energy Star certified appliances that reduce water and energy consumption
When it comes to our neighborhoods, we work to make sure they’re environmentally-friendly as well. Every phase of development in Ranchers’ Rise includes green spaces, wetlands, and nature trails that can be enjoyed by our residents, but they also help preserve the local resources and wildlife.
